014: Goblin Quest - Rules Hack 1 - Kobold Quest

Have you ever wanted to step into the shoes of a cunning kobold, navigating a fantastical Underdungeon to please a mighty dragon king? This week, we delve into Kobold Quest, a fascinating rules hack for the Goblin Quest RPG, designed by Grant Howitt.

Kobold Quest takes the quirky, zany feel of Goblin Quest and adds a unique twist by swapping out goblins for slightly more intelligent, cunning, and feisty small dragon people—kobolds. These reptilian humanoids are tasked with designing barely functional traps and using them to complete dubious schemes, all to gain the favor of their mighty dragon king.

In this episode, we break down the rules and mechanics of Kobold Quest, making it easy for you to jump right into the action. You'll learn how to create your kobold gang, decide on their specialties, and gather pockets full of junk to aid in your quest. We also explore the fascinating setting of the Underdungeon, a sprawling network of disused mines, mysterious tunnels, and natural caves.

One of the highlights of Kobold Quest is the contraption-building phase. Each of equipment piece you gather during your heists has its own unique input and output, and the success of your machine depends on how well you and your fellow players can assemble it.

But the fun doesn't stop there. The game also introduces a variety of new NPCs, from gnomes and ratmen, to dwarven engineers and mad scientists. The possibilities are endless, allowing you to let your imagination run wild as you craft your story.

As we guide you through the mechanics and storytelling elements of Kobold Quest, you'll find this game is so similar to Goblin Quest, yet slightly different.
