>> Clint Scheirer: Are you enjoying season one of, the Claim to Game Podcast but are
00:00:02
ready to move on to our next game to claim?
00:00:05
In today's episode, we are examining what
00:00:08
games you can vote on to be the next Tabletop RPG
00:00:11
we cover in Season 2, airing in
00:00:14
fall of 2024! For each
00:00:17
RPG option, we will cover: the name of the game,
00:00:20
the game's premise, and what tabletop
00:00:22
RPG game system each game uses for
00:00:25
gameplay. Welcome to claim to Game the podcast
00:00:28
helping busy people master tabletop role playing games,
00:00:31
one game at a time. I'm Clint Scheirer. I've been an
00:00:34
educator for over twelve years and have helped gamers of
00:00:37
all levels quickly grasp Tabletop RPG's
00:00:40
so they can enjoy playing them to the fullest. Stay
00:00:43
tuned so you can make your claim to game.
00:00:45
Hello and welcome back to this special bonus
00:00:48
episode of Claim to Game, a predominantly
00:00:50
educational, fun podcast in which I am daring to coin
00:00:53
the word fungucational. Its like if you decided
00:00:56
to kick a plain old soccer ball into just a
00:00:59
regular soccer goal and you were rewarded with a
00:01:02
high five from AFC Richmond's football head
00:01:05
coach, Ted Lasso, played by actor
00:01:08
Jason Sudeikis. One of my favorite Ted Lasso
00:01:11
quotes is be curious, not
00:01:13
judgmental, whether or not you have already binge
00:01:16
watched this 2020 Apple TV
00:01:18
exclusive, these words spoken by this
00:01:21
fictional sports coach are relevant to what we
00:01:24
are doing next here on Claim to Game. To be honest, I
00:01:27
went back and forth over the past week whether I wanted to
00:01:30
release this episode or not. My hesitation was
00:01:33
due to the fact that in episode 14, I already
00:01:36
shared the opportunity to rank the top five
00:01:39
games in the running for our next game to
00:01:42
master on the show. I have received some
00:01:44
responses, but I have a feeling, a feeling
00:01:47
that maybe you, yes, you listening right
00:01:50
now, have not yet cast your vote. And why
00:01:53
not? Maybe you need a little bit more
00:01:55
information to pique your curiosity.
00:01:58
In order for me to be curious and not judgmental, I
00:02:01
found that I just need to know more. What are the
00:02:04
games being considered for Season 2? What are they
00:02:07
about? What makes them so great or
00:02:10
interesting compared to all the other tabletop RPG's out there
00:02:13
that you could play? By the time I'm done
00:02:15
today, going through the five games you can vote
00:02:18
on, I'm hoping you feel like Ted
00:02:21
Lasso, not only curious versus judgmental,
00:02:24
but also how he felt in season one, episode
00:02:26
six, Two Aces. Like you fell out of a lucky
00:02:29
tree, hit every branch on the way down, and ended up in a
00:02:32
pool full of cash and sour patch kids
00:02:35
So let's unpack each one of these juicy
00:02:38
sour patch kids of an RPG so you
00:02:41
can chew on them and then go rank them and
00:02:43
cast your vote in the survey in the show
00:02:46
notes.
00:02:47
Option number one Brindlewood Bay a
00:02:50
dark and cozy mystery. This game was
00:02:53
funded on Kickstarter in 2023. Created by
00:02:56
the Gauntlet. It's described as a tabletop
00:02:58
rpg that combines Murder, She Wrote with
00:03:01
H.P. Lovecraft. In it, you play a group
00:03:04
of elderly women, members of the local Murder
00:03:07
Maven's Mystery Book Club, who help the authorities
00:03:10
solve murder cases in a picturesque New
00:03:13
England town. Over the course of their investigations,
00:03:16
they become aware of a dark occult conspiracy
00:03:19
that connects the cases and will eventually
00:03:22
have them face that conspiracy in order to save the
00:03:25
community and possibly the World.
00:03:28
The game is low prep, easy to play. It
00:03:30
uses game mechanics Powered by the Apocalypse, and who
00:03:33
doesn't want to play a bunch of old grannies saving the world
00:03:36
from the dark forces?
00:03:38
Option number two: Old Gods Of Appalachia
00:03:41
the Role Playing Game. Based on the narrative eldritch
00:03:44
horror fiction podcast of the same name,
00:03:46
Old Gods of Appalachia was also a Kickstarter
00:03:49
baby Funded in 2022 and created
00:03:52
by Monte Cook Games, Powered by the Cypher
00:03:55
System. It provides concept driven
00:03:57
character creation with limitless options.
00:04:00
Venture into the dark, eerie past of an
00:04:03
alternate appalachia, experiencing stories of
00:04:05
horror, hardship, and heart in the
00:04:08
immersive narrative and deeply chilling setting.
00:04:11
Ravenous creatures in the inner dark, sinister plots
00:04:14
of the hollow men, unearthed beasts that have long
00:04:17
dreamt in the dark and angry forces of the
00:04:20
Green. Strive to protect what matters
00:04:23
from these terrors and more while you seek to know
00:04:26
the unknowable. Every choice requires a
00:04:28
sacrifice, and your word is, or
00:04:31
should be, your bond. I might have
00:04:34
goosebumps on top of my goosebumps after considering
00:04:37
what we might encounter playing Old Gods.
00:04:40
Option number three: Blades in the Dark.
00:04:43
Blades in the Dark was funded through a PBS TV
00:04:45
broadcast pledge drive. Just kidding. It
00:04:48
was also funded on Kickstarter, but nearly ten years
00:04:51
ago in 2015. Like Brindle Wood Bay, this
00:04:54
game also uses its own take on the power by the
00:04:56
Apocalypse rule system. It was created by Game
00:04:59
designer John Harper with Evil Hat Productions.
00:05:02
Blades in the Dark is a tabletop rpg
00:05:05
about a crew of daring scoundrels seeking their
00:05:08
fortunes on the haunted streets of an industrial
00:05:11
city. There are heists, chases,
00:05:14
occult mysteries, dangerous bargains, bloody
00:05:16
skirmishes, and above all, riches to be had.
00:05:19
If... you're bold enough to seize them. You and
00:05:22
a fledgling crew must thrive amidst the
00:05:25
threats of rival gangs, powerful noble
00:05:28
families, vengeful ghosts, the Blue Coats of the city
00:05:30
watch, and the siren song of your own
00:05:33
scoundrel vices. Will you rise to power in
00:05:36
the criminal underworld? What are you willing to
00:05:39
do to get to the top? That question makes
00:05:42
me think of the other age old question, "What would you do
00:05:45
for a Klondike bar?" Or should I say, "What
00:05:48
wouldn't you do for a Klondike bar?"
00:05:50
And option number four - we got Alien the Role
00:05:52
Playing Game. This was the only game on our list
00:05:55
which did not have a Kickstarter but went straight to print and
00:05:58
was very successful in 2019. Created
00:06:01
by Free League Publishing, this Game uses a
00:06:04
simple system of rolling several six sided dice to
00:06:07
resolve actions. Gamma rays and
00:06:09
neutrino bursts erupt from the dying stars to cook
00:06:12
you alive. Black holes tear you apart,
00:06:15
and the void itself boils your blood
00:06:18
and seizes your brain. Try to scream
00:06:21
and no one can hear you. Hold your breath and
00:06:24
you rupture your lungs. Space isn't as empty as
00:06:27
you think, either. Its frontiers are ever
00:06:29
expanding. Rival governments wage a cold war of
00:06:32
aggression, while greedy corporations vie for
00:06:35
valuable resources. Colonists reach for the
00:06:38
stars and gamble their lives away.
00:06:41
And there are things lurking in the shadows of
00:06:44
every asteroid. Things strange and
00:06:47
different and deadly things...
00:06:49
alien. The Alien Tabletop RPG
00:06:52
is a harsh and unforgiving universe, and you
00:06:55
are nothing if not expendable.
00:06:58
Stay alive if you can. Honestly, I've seen the
00:07:01
original Alien movie. I'm pretty sure I would be the first
00:07:04
spacer to be the host of an alien parasite
00:07:07
only to die a painful death. I sadly would
00:07:10
not be the Sigourney Weaver of the story.
00:07:12
And coming in is option number five. Last, but
00:07:15
certainly not least, is - Dragonbane: Mirth and
00:07:18
Mayhem Roleplaying. It was funded in Kickstarter in
00:07:21
2022 and uses a skill based D
00:07:24
20 system. Much like D & D.
00:07:26
Dragonbane is a classic fantasy tabletop role
00:07:29
playing game full of magic, mystery,
00:07:32
and adventure. It is designed from the ground up to
00:07:35
facilitate a fast and furious play
00:07:37
without Vin Diesel. With very little prep
00:07:40
and adventures that are a breeze to run.
00:07:43
This is a game with room for laughs at the table while
00:07:46
still offering brutal challenges for for the
00:07:49
adventurers. The publisher Free League, the same people
00:07:52
who made the Alien RPG, call this playstyle,
00:07:55
"Mirth and Mayhem Role Playing." Great for long
00:07:58
campaigns, but also perfect for a one
00:08:00
shot. Dragonbane is a translation of
00:08:03
Drakar och Demoner, Scandinavia's first and
00:08:06
biggest tabletop RPG. Originally launched
00:08:09
in 1982. You know what else was
00:08:11
launched in 1982? E.T. the
00:08:14
Extraterrestrial movie became the highest
00:08:17
grossing film of the decade. With E.T.
00:08:20
being an "alien" I can't help but see
00:08:23
a very far fetched connection to Free League's Alien
00:08:25
RPG. A master marketing plan or pure
00:08:28
coincidence? We may never know.
00:08:31
So, in conclusion, I need your help!
00:08:34
Any of these options would be enjoyable and fun for me
00:08:37
to cover in Season 2, but that isn't what I'm after.
00:08:40
That's not what I'm going for! I want to cover the
00:08:42
game our community is MOST interested in
00:08:45
learning. However, just like the 1990s tv show
00:08:48
Highlander, "There can only be one." So
00:08:51
please click on the link in our show notes to take the
00:08:54
survey. Rank the RPG's in order of
00:08:56
preference, 1 being your most preferred option
00:08:59
and 5 being your least preferred. Taking
00:09:02
this one action is the most important way you can help
00:09:05
make Claim to Game the show you want and
00:09:08
deserve. You have until June 30th of
00:09:10
2024 and then... it... will... close!
00:09:13
So take the survey today. And until the next time
00:09:16
we make our claim to game, one game at a time.
